A couple years ago, I had a dream of painting knots. I love the texture of large threaded rope. I knew I needed nautical rope but had no idea where to find it. One day, while hiking in Mulholland Wildflower Preserve in Ithaca, I discovered a large loop of nautical rope, perfect gauge, lodged underneath a large log! I removed the rope, took it home and soaked it in water to get the dirt out, then dried it in the sun.

I found a book of illustrated knots and picked one I thought would be challenging and fun to draw, called a “Carrick Bend”. I love how the rope folds in on itself multiple times.
