My parents have a cabin in upstate NY and before dad built the woodshed, the wood was stored in a giant woodpile. The stacks created some interesting patterns and colors, and so I thought it would be fun to paint it.

The joke I kept running while I was working on this was “I chopped some of these logs [I actually did], and I’m not sure whether it’s harder to draw them or chop them.” Coloring each individual log was incredibly tedious and time-consuming. I used my newly-acquired Prismacolor pencils, after laying down some initial base color with watercolor.

I gave my folks the painting for xmas in 2014, over a year after starting it. I’m not sure how many hours went into it, but it was etching away at it over time.
